I had the good opportunity to work as the gem specialist for a Discovery program on gemstones. we spent 5 days at the mines filming and exploring here are a few images of a shallow mine in Rathnapura Sri lanka.

This pit is around 20 feet deep and it was in this pit that a 970 carat Cornflower blue sapphire was unearthed . I have attached image of the big blue as well.
